The Seattle Underground is a network of underground passageways and basements in downtown Seattle. A maze of masonry, due to construction requirements that followed the Great Seattle Fire of 1889, these spaces were at ground level in the mid-19th century, but tides cause sewage problems, and new construction was raised 12 –30 feet higher than before. After the streets were elevated, these spaces fell into disuse, but have become a tourist attraction in recent decades.
